About Becky

Becky Plank is a dedicated Special Education Teacher with nearly a decade of experience at Desoto County Schools in Olive Branch, Mississippi. She began her journey in education as a Teaching Assistant before earning her position as a full-time Special Education Teacher in 2017, a role she continues to hold with deep commitment and passion.

Prior to entering K–12 education, Becky worked as a Pre-School Teacher at Maples Learning Center, where she planned and directed play-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children. That early childhood foundation gave her a lasting understanding of how children grow, learn, and thrive at every stage.

Becky holds a B.A. in Education from Otterbein University and a B.A. in Liberal Studies with concentrations in Elementary Education and Business Management from the University of Memphis, along with a valid Mississippi Teaching License in Special Education.

At the heart of Becky's work is a deeply held conviction: every child, regardless of ability, deserves a high-expectation, safe, and supportive learning environment.

Becky also offers personal tutoring services in the greater Memphis area, bringing the same individualized, student-centered approach she uses in the classroom directly to families who want focused, dedicated support outside of school.

As a mother of a disabled child herself, Becky brings rare personal insight to her work. She understands firsthand the hopes, fears, and daily realities that families of students with disabilities navigate. That perspective makes her not just a skilled educator, but a true partner to the families she serves.

Beyond the classroom, Becky has volunteered as an IEP Advocate since 2012, with over 14 years of service helping families in the Memphis area navigate the special education process with confidence and clarity.

My Approach to Special Education

Individualized Instruction

Every student has a unique learning profile. Whether in the classroom or through private tutoring, I design instruction tailored to each student's strengths, needs, and goals, including Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Data-Driven Learning

I continuously collect and analyze assessment data to inform instruction, track student growth, and adjust lesson plans in real time. Progress is never an afterthought. It's built into every lesson.

High Expectations for Every Student

I plan lessons that align with state content standards while incorporating higher-order thinking skills. I believe all students, regardless of disability, are capable of meaningful academic and personal growth.

Inclusive, Culturally Responsive Teaching

My lessons are designed to honor the diversity of students' backgrounds, cultures, language proficiencies, learning levels, and interests. I bring multiple perspectives to the delivery of content, because every child deserves to see themselves reflected in their education.

Safe, Supportive Classroom Climate

I am committed to maintaining Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Behavior Modification Plans (BMPs) to ensure every student feels safe, respected, and ready to learn.

Family & Community Partnership

Regular, transparent communication with families and guardians is central to my practice. As a parent myself, I know how much it matters to feel genuinely heard. I partner with families, administrators, and related service providers to support the whole child, not just the student.
